1 The Caress of the Family 1

Location:

Italy (three country actions), Kosovo and Colombia

Number of children who will benefit annually:

48

PROPOSING AND REPORTING AGENCY:

Antoniano di Bologna (Italy)

1 1
This project aids abandoned children through the creation of real family-type houses, the Family Homes. Each is run by two parents that have decided to dedicate themselves to this sector, caring for up to six children. Around them is constructed the means to create the best possible life conditions, including support educators and psychologists.

The aim is to take these children away from a condition of "assistance" (the one that is guaranteed in institutions and other public care structures) and give them the experience of a real welcoming family.

1 Helping Children with Clefts 1

Location:

India, Brazil

Number of children who will benefit annually:

400

Proposing and Reporting Agency:

The Smile Train, Inc (USA)
1 1
The Smile Train has treated almost 205,000 kids and trained more than 20,000 doctors since it started. In 2006 it helped 42,225 children. This year it is committed to training thousands more local doctors and increasing the number of life-changing free cleft surgeries by 20,000, to take the total to 60,000.

Many children with clefts cannot eat properly, and often have hearing problems. Speech is often unintelligible and sometimes the child's face is so disfigured that they are not allowed to attend school or participate in normal activities. Many families keep children with clefts hidden in shame and isolation.
